WordSpies: A Tour of the App

WordSpies started as a browser word game and grew into a language-exchange community — one place where you can meet real people from around the world, message and voice-call them, drop into audio "parties," pick up phrases you actually need, and play a game together when you feel like it. Here's the guided tour.

The Community wall

The heart of it. A grid of profiles from members around the world — their native language, what they're learning, a short bio, and how recently they were active. Filter by online now, nearby, brand new, or the always-available Chat Experts. Every card takes one tap to open the full profile, and one tap from there to say hello.

Chats

Direct messages with anyone on the wall. Text, images, emoji, voice notes and one-tap voice calls — clean rounded bubbles, no ads, no algorithm shuffling replies. If a chat isn't right for you, every profile has Report and Block one tap away, and the chat itself shows a system message on both sides when a block goes into effect.

Parties — live audio rooms

Anyone can host a party: pick a topic, share a code, and up to twenty people drop in. Some talk, others listen and react with emoji + rationed chat. The audio runs on Cloudflare's real-time network, so it stays crisp across continents. Great for language-exchange nights when you want more than a one-to-one chat.

The language surface: coming-soon shelf for phrasebooks, week-by-week roadmaps, curated resources and (soon) verified language teachers. You can already leave a note on what would help you most — those requests shape what we build next.

AI conversation partners

Three always-available "Chat Experts" — Amy (British), Matthew (American) and Ashley (Australian). Not for cheating your homework, just for practising conversation when nobody's online. They know they're AI, chat naturally, and remember what you said in the same conversation.

The word game

The original game is still here for group nights: create a room, share a 4-letter code, and up to ten friends join from any phone or laptop. Two teams, 5×5 grid, one-word clues, and one assassin word that ends everything. Full rules in this guide.

References

Members can leave written testimonials for people they've enjoyed chatting with. They show on your profile with the author's name and photo — real social proof that you're a good person to chat with. New references get a badge on your community card so people scanning the wall can spot fresh recommendations.
